Summary:  The Ultrasound OB-GYN Technicain will provide outstanding patient care in the Labor and Delivery Department duties specified. 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position)
 
Performs diagnostic two-dimensional static B-Node and real time ultrasound of the body.Performs all associated administrative duties.Receives patient, operates ultrasound equipment, scans patient to obtain images necessary for requested examination.Independently performs scans which illustrate normal and abnormal anatomy through control of time gain constant, near and far gain, or change of transducer frequency to optimize the scans for diagnostic use; recognizes when different scans, positions or angulations are needed to better illustrate or accurately define internal structure.
Advises radiologist and/or referring physician of results of the examination and provides preliminary information regarding diagnostic evaluation.Notifies radiologist of significant scans requiring immediate attention and modification while the patient is undergoing the examination and remains in the department.Recognizes situations or abnormalities that require the direct observation of the real-time scan by the radiologist. Images structures while simultaneously obtaining Doppler signal and recording images and Doppler shift recordings along with patient information for interpretation by a radiologist.
Responsible for training radiology residents in use of the ultrasound equipment, to include hands-on training, theory, supervision of residents when scanning, procedures, standard scanning planes or standard views and recommendations on various techniques.Technologist may also be tasked to give formal classroom lectures to residents.
Assists the radiologist in performing invasive diagnostic techniques such as needle biopsies, aspirations, and guided needle-wire placement exams for surgery.Provides standardization and training to residents regarding these exams.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of developments in the field of sonography to recommend new techniques, methods, examinations and guidelines for adoption.Procedures may change frequently due to new developments in the field.
Obtains an acceptable and satisfactory diagnostic image as determined by a radiologist to interpret.
Works under the general supervision of the Supervisor, BAMC Ultrasound Section, who defines objective and sets overall priorities.Receives medical professional guidance from staff radiologist.Performs routine and non-standard procedures independently in accordance with experience, previous training, and accepted practices. Accomplishment of the work schedule and quality of images is responsibility of the technologist subject to final review of the radiologist.The contract technologist rarely consults the supervisor for technical advice and is the recognized expert in ultrasound in the unit.Work is reviewed upon completion for adherence to policy and overall adequacy.
Knowledge of instrumentation and equipment sufficient to manipulate all controls to obtain the best possible images of each disease process and to determine when maintenance or repair is needed.
Ability to perform complex ultrasound procedures on compromised, critically ill patients, and to adapt techniques to perform non-standard procedures.
Knowledge of physiology and cross-sectional anatomy to identify the location, appearance and function of the various major and minor systems and the physical abnormalities associated with most diseases or lesions which are customarily illustrated by ultrasound in order to interpret examinations accurately, and to determine when further tests or different positions are required.

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)
 
Minimum two (2) years experience as an OB-GYN Sonographer and currently licensed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists with (SONO) certification and ultrasound technologist.  
Must be certified by ARRT with SONO in the credential offered by ARRT https://www.arrt.org/Certification   or the ARDMS credential ARDMS http://www.ardms.org/ .   The government will accept either certification  by ARRT OR ARDMS credential.
Have and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Ability to perform complex ultrasound procedures on compromised, critically ill patients, and to adapt techniques to perform non-standard procedures.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of instrumentation and equipment sufficient to manipulate all controls to obtain the best possible images of each disease process and to determine when maintenance or repair is needed.
Knowledge of physiology and cross-sectional anatomy to identify the location, appearance and function of the various major and minor systems and the physical abnormalities associated with most diseases or lesions which are customarily illustrated by ultrasound in order to interpret examinations accurately, and to determine when further tests or different positions are required.
